DBC Members Only – Free Beginning Bird Watching Course

If you are a member of the DuPage Birding Club in good standing and are a beginning birder, the DBC is offering you an opportunity to learn more about birds and increase your birding ID skills. As a service to its members, the Club is initiating a free course for beginning birders taught by DuPage County birders Denis Kania and Joe Suchecki. The Club-sponsored course will provide beginning birders with information, resources, and tips on how to become a better birder, find more birds, and hopefully increase the joys of birding for you. Announcing: DuPage Birding Club Photo Contest

The DuPage Birding Club is proud to announce its first bird photography contest! The DBC is looking for pictures of birds taken between December 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022. Photographs will be judged by a small team of DBC members. All photos are welcome: amateur, funny, imperfect, high-quality. The “story behind the shot” will be taken into account when judging. 2021 Fermi-Batavia Christmas Bird Count Sets Records

On December 18, 2021, 90 birders counted every bird they could see and hear within the 15-mile circle during the 46th Fermi-Batavia CBC. Eighty-seven species were observed in the count, above our 10-year average of 84 species. We had high counts of six species and added two new species to the count: Bohemian Waxwing and Tennessee Warbler. Thank you to all the area captains and counters in making this year another successful count!

Mini-Tutorial: Harris’s Sparrow

The DBC Board is pleased to present Mini-Tutorials on the DBC YouTube Channel. Mini-tutorial covering songbird plumage (feathers) and molt, which is the process of replacing feathers with new ones. The video establishes some basic plumage and molt vocabulary, and goes into examples of immature and mature birds and how much their appearance can change throughout a year. DBC Members Honored by DuPage County Forest Preserve

  On October 27 at the site of the Greene Valley Hawkwatch, Erik Neidy (Director, Natural Resources Management, DuPage Forest Preserve District,) and Cindy Hedges (Stewardship Program Coordinator) presented DBC member Bob Fisher with a plaque acknowledging the many contributions he and his late wife Karen have made in support of the Forest Preserve’s goals. The surprise ceremony was attended by Scott Meister (Manager of Natural Resources) many hawkwatch volunteers, and friends of Bob from DuPage Birding Club, including President Steve Constantelos and Natalie McFaul, Vice-President.
