2026 Spring Bird Count Results

Joe Suchecki - DuPage County Compiler

The annual Spring Bird Count was conducted on Saturday May 9, 2026, when over 100 DuPage birders spread out across the county to participate in this statewide event. The weather during the count was just about perfect with mild temperatures and fair skies. With good conditions, our very skilled DuPage birders were expecting a good count for the day.

In all, birders tallied 180 species and over 25,000 birds for the count. The 180 species was slightly above the average number of species seen over the last 20 years and tied the results from last year. Our most commonly seen birds were the Red-winged Blackbird, American Robin, Canada Goose, Tree Swallow, and House Sparrow. That list of the five most common birds has pretty much stayed the same over the last few years. A complete list of the birds seen is available here: All Areas Spring 2026 Summary.

My thanks to everyone who participated in the count. Special thanks to the Area Captains who make our Spring Count a success. They are Dave Hodge, Kyle Wiktor, Nancy Allured, Dave Yeager, Urs Geiser, Diann Bilderback, Glenn Perricone, William Huebler, Dave Spleha, Jerry and Jodi Zamirowski, Susan Kaley, Linda Radke, Joe Suchecki, Mike Madsen, and Jim Green.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 8, 2027 for next year's Spring Bird Count!

Trip Report: A Great Time at Horicon Marsh

Contributed by Natalie McFaul The first DBC field trip to Horicon Marsh was a great success! It was two days of good birds and good company. A friendly group of 17 people participated in the DBC field trip and had some pretty exciting birding experiences. Friday evening, we took a leisurely two-hour pontoon ride into the marsh. We watched White Pelicans fly in as Troy Kirchhoff and Rick Vant Hoff from Blue Heron Landing pointed out birds and shared stories and a little history of Horicon Marsh.  Photo by Sherry Courtney Saturday morning there was a field trip led by […]

Kick off Your Summer Fun: Monitor Birds with BCN

The Bird Conservation Network (BCN) is actively recruiting new monitors for the annual BCN Survey. Start your summer strong by joining the dozens of other birders who spend a few mornings each summer monitoring our breeding birds. Now in its 25th year, this important community science project relies on birders with at least three years of experience to count birds during the June breeding season. Training sessions will be available to review the protocols and help you enhance your skill-set for birding by ear. Have some favorite birding spots? Chances are good that one or more of them is an […]

Because of the variety and quality of the submissions, the committee had a very tough time deciding on which pictures to recognize; the committee would like to thank all the photographers for their entries.
