Annual Spring Bird Count, Saturday, May 9

Hold the date and participate in the 2026 Spring Bird Count in DuPage County on Saturday, May 9th.

The Spring Bird Count is held annually throughout Illinois around the first weekend in May and is intended to provide some information and data on early spring bird migration throughout Illinois. The Spring Bird Count also is a great opportunity for birders of all skill levels to get out in the field and look for all those great and colorful spring migrants moving through northeastern Illinois. The DuPage Birding Club coordinates the spring count efforts in DuPage County under the able leadership of Joe Suchecki. Last year we recorded 180 species on spring count day. Results from past counts can be found at https://dupagebirding.org/bird-counts/.

It's time to get ready for this year's count! If you have participated in the past, look for an email in mid-April from Joe with information about the count, your area captain, and your count area. If you have not participated previously and would like to join the fun this year, contact Joe at dupagesbc@gmail.com, and he will put you in touch with an area captain for the count.

Finally, Joe is looking for a new captain for Area 5. This area includes West Chicago Prairie, the ponds and areas along Fabyan Parkway and DuPage Airport. If interested, please contact him.

Last year 137 participants counted birds on the spring count in DuPage County. We would like even more people to participate this year. So, don't miss out on the fun and excitement of the great Spring Bird Count on May 9th. Any questions? Contact Joe at dupagesbc@gmail.com.

Decoy Sale Raises $2,000+

The collection of decoys donated to the Club from the estate of fellow birder Craig Holderness earned the Club just over $2,000 at a two-day sale and silent auction hosted by the North American Decoy Collectors Show April 29-30, held at The Westin Hotel in Lombard. Many thanks to Joe Suchecki, who researched decoy pricing and had the collection evaluated, arranged for our exhibit at the decoy event, mustered the supporting team, and hosted our table. Other volunteers included Jane Barnett, Daphne Suchecki, Diann Bilderback, Steve Constantelos, Natalie McFaul, John Hebert, and Denis and Melissa Kania. Well done, team! All […]

Mini-Tutorial: Three Things To Help Birds

The DBC Board is pleased to present Mini-Tutorials on the DBC YouTube Channel. Denis Kania presents three things you can do in your backyard to help birds: provide shelter, food, and water. With a diversity of offerings-not all species want the same things-almost half of DuPage’s 268 bird species could be attracted to your yard. Many of these birds pass through during their vulnerable migration time: all the more motivation to help them. Shelter takes the form of houses and, especially, vegetation. Food-especially insects!-is critical. Again, this is often vegetation, so reduce turf lawn and add more native flowers, shrubs, […]

10th Anniversary Big Fun Morning June 5

Get ready for a Big Fun Morning as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Club’s first Big Day in 2012. We will bird from 5 am (if your team wants to do some owling) and quit at noon. We will bird at ONE site. This keeps us relatively “green” by not wasting fuel and keeps us outside and avoiding carpooling, in case there’s another variant headed our way. We’ll meet for lunch afterwards at Hidden Lake – we’ve got the picnic shelter reserved all day, and plan to have food arrive by 1 pm. How can you participate?  There […]
