DuPage Birding Club Summer ‘23 Photo Contest Now Open!

The DBC is looking for pictures of birds taken between June 1 and August 31, 2023. All photos are welcome: amateur, funny, imperfect, high-quality. The “story behind the shot” is also taken into account when judging. The judges want this to be a fun contest; no categories have been predefined for award winners so every entry has a chance to win! Save the Date: August 5 Birding and Breakfast

DuPage Birding Club invites all members to join us for our annual Birding and Breakfast event on Saturday, August 5, at Blackwell Forest Preserve.  After some morning birding around the forest preserve, DBC will serve breakfast to all attendees. Meet at 7 AM at the South Shelter. After turning in to Blackwell off of Butterfield Road continue North on the main drive about a quarter of a mile. Want to help birds in a big way? Join other birding enthusiasts who dedicate time monitoring our breeding birds each breeding season, adding to two-plus decades of a valuable dataset essential to land managers and researchers.  Our breeding birds truly are “the canaries in the coal mine.” The Bird Conservation Network (BCN) is actively recruiting new monitors for its annual BCN Survey. Joe Suchecki Earns Distinguished Achievement Award

At the March 2023 DBC meeting, long-time member Joe Suchecki was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award in recognition of his exceptional service to the DuPage Birding Club. Joe has served on the Board in many capacities, including President and most recently Corresponding Secretary. In addition to these important roles, Joe has lent his creative and organizational talents in several other capacities, including DBC Education Channel contributions and a Beginning Birder course, managing the Spring Bird Count, championing a collaboration between the DBC and the DuPage Forest Preserve to restore a woodland understory, and orchestrating the sale of donated decoys on

The DuPage Birding Club will be sponsoring exhibits at the Gull Frolic February 18 and at Wild Things February 25. The former is the annual Winthrop Harbor gathering to search for interesting gull species and other waterfowl, while Wild Things is the semiannual conference of the Chicago Wilderness conservation community in a session-packed day covering everything from habitat management to new research to case studies and more on our wild places and the creatures who live in them. Each presentation is limited to 10 minutes, so please be very selective and limit yourself to 10 to 15 images to share. We will only have time to show approximately 10 presentations. Decoy Sales Fund a Wetlands Initiative Project

The DBC donated $2,000 to fund a restoration project managed by The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) from proceeds derived from the sale of the beautiful collection of decoys the family of longtime DuPage birder Craig Holderness donated to the Club in his memory. The donation will support the second year of habitat restoration at Violet Meadow, so named for the four native violet species that thrive there. Violet Meadow is part of TWI’s internationally recognized restoration site, the Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge in northcentral Illinois.
