The DBC’s Fall ’22 photo contest was a great success! The 27 entries were judged by John Hebert, Andie Duffy, Steve Constantelos, Natalie McFaul, and Mike Warner. Because of the variety and quality of the submissions, the committee had a very tough time deciding on which pictures to recognize. Forest Preserve District Awarded Grant to Restore Woodland at Blackwell

Partnership to Restore Woodland Understory Will Benefit Birds — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and DuPage Birding Club jointly announce a grant to restore a woodland understory near McKee Marsh at Blackwell Forest Preserve in West Chicago. The DuPage Birding Club is providing a $2,000 grant to the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County 501(c)(3) to fund the planting of nearly 100 native tree saplings and shrubs. NEW DATE: Sunday, November 6 is Planting Day at McKee Marsh

Due to expected inclement weather on Saturday, we are moving the Planting Day to Sunday, November 6, when it is expected to be sunny and mild. Can you spare a few hours to help the DBC plant native shrubs at a woodland in McKee Marsh? The Club is partnering with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County on a project to improve habitat for our forest birds by restoring the understory of a local woodland. If you’re among the 45+ volunteers who gave of your time on behalf of the Club in the last year, we want to thank you at a luncheon Saturday, October 29, at Blackwell Forest Preserve. The event is open to anyone who has volunteered on behalf of the club in the last year. DuPage Birding Club’s Fall ‘22 Photo Contest Now Open!

The DBC is looking for pictures of birds taken between September 1, 2022 and November 30, 2022. Photographs will be judged by a small team of DBC members. All photos are welcome: amateur, funny, imperfect, high-quality. The “story behind the shot” will be taken into account when judging. The judges want this to be a fun contest; no categories have already been defined for award-winners so every entry has a chance to win! The contest is open to DBC members only. Nancy Allured Featured in “Catching Nature”

DBC member Nancy Allured was recently profiled in the DuPage Forest Preserves feature called “Catching Nature,” which highlights people connecting with nature in our managed lands. Nancy shares her lifelong love of nature and how birding has been an ongoing way to connect to the natural world. Greene Valley Hawkwatch to Begin 17th Season

September 1st marks the beginning of the hawkwatching season atop the scenic overlook at Greene Valley F.P. Volunteers have been counting migrating raptors since 2006 from this site. The data collected here and from nearly 200 other sites in Central and North America is used in the scientific study of migration and the promotion of raptor conservation. At 190 feet above the surrounding landscape, “The Hill” offers a 360 degree view of the horizon. On clear days one can see landmarks from six counties. DBC Funds IOS Grant Project at Midewin

Under the guidance of the club’s Grants and Donations Committee, the DBC has awarded $1,000 to the Midewin Tallgrass Prairie Alliance for the purchase of a high-resolution viewing scope. The scope will be installed in the Welcome Center at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie for visitor use. One focus of the scope will be the viewing of an active Bald Eagle nest located ¼ mile west of the Welcome Center. It will also be used by U.S. Forest Service rangers and volunteers to provide visitors the opportunity to view, learn about, and appreciate the many special bird species that frequent and
